The Calheta district has had a vast amount of improvements in its infrastructure, in particular the new highways giving easy access to the whole of the island.
Calheta :
Simply enchanting! Blessed with rare natural beauty, the region of
Calheta includes eight parishes namely Arco da Calheta, Calheta,
Estreito da Calheta, Faja da Ovelha, Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Ponta
do Pargo and Prazeres spread over a total area of 116 square
kilometres.
Whether
you walk along by the sea or hike in the steep mountains or descend
down to the valleys, you will enjoy the many wonders of nature
surrounding you. One could describe this area as mountain peaks,
sloping valleys and lush vegetation make this agricultural village an
interesting stop over.
The
sky spreads before you like a canvas in tones of blue and the beauty of
the sea with its crystal waters attracts your eyes and invites you to
take a swim when the heat can be felt with greater intensity. In
order to provide you with some knowledge of the history of this area,
here are a few facts related to each of the parishes of the Calheta
district, the largest of the Archipelago of Madeira. This is one of the oldest parishes of the island was one of the first to be explored by the primitive colonizers. Founded on the 1st of June 1502
by Royal Decree from Dom Manuel the Virtuous, the Municipal Assembly of
the region stipulated that the town’s anniversary should be celebrated
on the 24th of June, this day coinciding with the St. John’s celebrations. Besides
its attractive location, surrounded by rocks and almost caressing the
ocean, Calheta – which actually means ‘small beach’ in Portuguese – has
an old sugar cane factory, founded in 1901 and still producing sugar
cane honey and ‘aguardente’ (sugar cane spirit or Firewater) an
essential ingredient of the typical Madeiran drink 'Poncha' distilled
at the "Engenhos da Calheta" (distillery). Calheta
is also famous for the wide variety of fish to be found in its coastal
waters. Recently, a new visitors’ attraction was added to this
enchanting place by the sea. The
Art Centre of Casa das Mudas, where alternating high-quality
exhibitions will be on display, is an ambitious architectural project
designed in complete harmony with its surroundings.
Arco da Calheta : Founded
in 1572, the parish of Arco da Calheta is set between the mountains and
got its name from the surrounding hills and its proximity to the parish
of Calheta. After the discovery of the island this parish was one of
the first to be submitted to huge agricultural explorations, giving
origin to extensive lands with noble houses, chapels and cultivated
areas.
The busiest time of the year is the 7th and the 8th of
September when the parish celebrates its annual procession and a fair
to honour the patron saint São Braz.
Estreito : The
way the land slopes means that there is always a view for everybody.
Many homes and cottages are dotted about the landscape and most of them
cultivate some form of fruit or vegetable - either for subsistence
farming or for large scale production such as wine or sugar cane
processing. Estreito da Calheta is classic countryside and the cottages
draw upon the traditions and colours of the region. The most notable
characteristic of the area is its lush green and flowery countryside
and the tranquillity and charm of nature.
Jardim do Mar : A
small parish by the sea, between Estreito da Calheta and Paul do Mar.
Features a beautiful Gothic style, church. Jardim do Mar (literally
‘garden of the sea’) was first under the authority of Prazeres and Paul
do Mar, gaining its independence in the 18th century.
Its name
originates in the transition between steep slopes without vegetation
and a wonderful green seaside resort that was once covered with a
mantle of wild flowers. Surrounded
by the sea and cloaked by the mountains, this parish preserves the
tranquillity of the old days, of which the old narrow streets and
low-level houses with different shapes of chimneys still bear witness.
Jardim do Mar became the island’s meeting point for the international surfing community. Due to its location, the Madeira archipelago is a privileged spot to receive swells of the North Atlantic and has all sorts of waves, from point breaks to reef breaks.
Ponta do Pargo : The
westernmost point of Madeira island is well known for its strategic
located lighthouse. Here agriculture and cattle rising is the main
activity, beautiful green land scenery. Ponta do Pargo´s name came from
its location on the extreme coastal west point (Ponta) and for being
rich in a species of fish called 'pargo'.
Due to its plane terrain this is a very distinguished area on Madeira Island.
Tranquil and peculiar, this parish maintains its charm almost all year
round, becoming especially alive when religious festivals occur.
Another event that makes it shine is the ‘Apple Festival’ (Festa do
Pêro).
Fajã da Ovelha : As most of the parishes on the island, this village developed from a big concentration of population around a small chapel.
The
narrow sleepy tracks and alleys that criss-cross the village with its
typical houses and beautiful gardens will enchant the curious visitor.
Part
of the village is sitting on a rock, of which traditions says that it
is protected by Saint Amaro so that Fajã da Ovelha doesn't fall onto
the village of Paul do Mar lying below at the sea side.
Prazeres : The
name of this parish originates from a small chapel dedicated to 'Our
Lady of Prazeres'. Blessed by Mother Nature with an amazing beauty,
this village is without any doubt one of the most picturesque of the
island!
This small village also offers the delights of a parish
run zoo, herb garden and tea house. Well worth a visit and very well
looked after. The entire parish is sitting on an enormous terrace from
where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the ocean and the
surrounding area. Don’t just drive by, make a stop and take some
moments to delight at this amazing scenery.
Paul do Mar: Paul
do Mar is one of the most important fishing centres of the archipelago.
The ocean provides this parish with an incredibly rich variety of fish,
to such an extent that it has become a reference in the world of
gastronomy. Until
the late 1960s you could only access this fishing village by boat and
for the next thirty years the only way to go down there was very slowly
and carefully on a dangerous road. Fortunately the new road did not do
any damage to the romantic aspect of the village and everywhere you go
you can be sure to find peace, authenticity and tranquillity. Going out of Paul do Mar through one
